DAPHNE & GARY HATCHER established Pine Mills Pottery in the woodlands of northeast Texas in 1979. The pottery was begun after their return from Europe where they apprenticed with potters in England, France and Greece, including eighteen months in Devon with David Leach. The work produced at Pine Mills Pottery is primarily wood fired stoneware, both thrown and constructed from slabs. Work is produced in multiples, focusing on form and color and a high degree of quality. The Hatchers fire a 128 cubic foot Bourry box wood fired kiln to cone 12 several times a year. In addition to their wood fired kiln, they have built a smaller 45 cubic foot propane fired car kiln in which bisque and some glaze firing is done. Daphne and Gary work independently of one another and rarely collaborate on pieces, though they share the same studio, clays, glazes and kilns. About ninety percent of what they make is sold directly from the studio showroom. Other works are sent to selected exhibitions or projects. DAPHNE ROEHR HATCHER has been a full-time studio potter for nearly thirty years, sharing her studio with husband Gary Hatcher after three years of apprenticeship training in Europe and Great Britain. She received a BFA degree in art from the University of North Texas School of Visual Arts and has received many awards for her work in the ceramic field, including the UNT 1999 President’s Citation. Daphne Hatcher exhibits widely in invitational and juried exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. In recent years she has exhibited her ceramic art in the Northern Arizona University Art Museum, San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, The University of Iowa Museum of Art, The South Texas Institute for the Arts, The Ohio Craft Museum, The Vermont Clay Studio and the Dallas Visual Arts Center. Daphne has work on permanent display in the American Airlines Corporate Collection, Ceramics Monthly Collection in Westerville, Ohio and many others. Her work is included in the private collection of Garth Clark and Mark Del Vecchio. Images of her work have appeared in numerous books and periodicals “Control, surrender, the integration of surface and form: these are considerations focused on in my current body of work. I have fired pots with glazed surfaces in various kilns, often with complex layers and patterns, but wood firing provides the balance between control and surrender I seek.” GARY C. HATCHER’s current work is focused around the juxtaposition of refined ceramic form and surface coloration. His works are wood fired for 24 hours or more and receive a subtle coating of wood ash from the firing. In addition to sharing a studio with Daphne Roehr Hatcher, he is department chair and professor of art at The University of Texas at Tyler and holds both BFA and MFA degrees. He has served as guest editor for Studio Potter Magazine and his work has been featured in Ceramics Art and Perception, Ceramics Monthly and American Craft. His work is exhibited widely. Numerous major exhibitions of his work have been held in various venues including the Tyler Museum of Art, Baylor University, Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, and Houston Center for Contemporary Crafts and Irving Arts Center.
